BIOGRAPHY

  • Dr. Dong Ryul Lee is a Professor of the Department of Biomedical Science, CHA University in Seongnam, Korea since 2001 and also Director of CHA Stem Cell Institute. Also, he served as a Scientific Director of Center for ESC and PSC Researches, CHA Advanced Research Institute. Dr. Lee received his Ph.D. degree from the Department of Biology, Hanyang University, Seoul, Korea in 1999 and performed his postdoctoral training in the Department of Animal Science, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY (1999-2002). Dr. Lee also served as a Scientific Director at CHA Fertility Center in CHA Gangnam Medical Center (2001-2017).

Dr. Lee’s research fields are the physiology of gametes and somatic cells in mammalian gonads and the stemness of embryonic stem cells (ESCs). Especially, he and his team have established human somatic cell nuclear transfer-derived stem cells (SCNT-SCs) using adult fibroblasts. Also, he has focused on the production of functional somatic cells from pluripotent stem cells for the cell therapy, especially gonadal somatic cells, muscle cells, and insulin-secreting cells.

He was a recipient of Trainee Research Award from the Society for the Study of Reproduction in 2001 and of Prize Paper Award of ASRM in 2003, 2005 and 2009, respectively. He has more than 150 peer reviewed publications and has authored multiple book chapters and reviews. He is a member of the editorial board of several prestigious journals.
